The council’s Better by… team will mark National Bike Week with a range of free events and activities this month (9 – 17 June 2018).
Events and activities will include free cycle skills classes, bike surgeries, a group cycle ride and more throughout the week and beyond.
Slough’s Bike Week aims to give everyone - young and old, beginners to experts - the chance to discover all the benefits of cycling, as well as inspire people to get back on their bikes.
It is also the opportune time to remind everyone of the number of on-going cycle initiatives happening in the borough.
From cycling skills and cycle maintenance lessons to bicycle hire and storage, there are a wide variety of cycling initiatives that could help you make that switch from car to bike.
If you’re thinking that you might be out of practice or lacking in confidence, you’ll be pleased to know that anyone living, working or studying in Slough is entitled to free cycle training.
During Bike Week, complimentary classes will run at the tennis courts in Salt Hill Park on Tuesday, 12 June between 5.30pm and 7.30pm and on Thursday, 14 June between 10.30am and 12.30pm; though classes are available throughout the year.
The sessions, which are run by Cycle Experience, include basic, advanced and urban cycle skills classes, and are suitable for everyone as they cater for all ages and abilities; from children and adults learning to cycle for the first time to teens and adults looking to brush up on their skills and confidence.
All lessons take place in Salt Hill Park in the morning and evenings as well, to offer as much flexibility as possible. Bikes and helmets are also provided for added convenience.
Additionally, there will be a flagship event at Wexham Park Hospital, which challenges staff to switch to bike that week, and for those that do, they will receive a free breakfast.
The ever popular smoothie bike will be at the event too!
The bike itself sits static, but has a blender attached to the back, and the more someone peddles on it, the more energy it generates to blend the fruit in the maker.
So after a sufficient amount of cycling, the rider will be treated to a tasty reward at the end!
Those in attendance will also get the chance to race friends and colleagues on Rollapaluza’s ‘spinning style’ static bikes, while a free bike surgery will mean people can bring their own bike down for minor repairs and maintenance.
Finally, to round off the week, Slough Freewheelers cycling club will lead a ride on Saturday, 16 June.
It will start in Stag Meadow car park (off Leonard’s Road) in Windsor at 10am, and will last between two to three hours, with the route being decided on the day.
The group will ride to match the abilities of those turning up for day, and will ensure that no one is left behind.
The group ride will be open to families and individuals alike, and refreshment stops will be scheduled in as part of the journey.
Free cycle maintenance training courses will continue happening throughout the year as well at Cycle Experience’s Slough office at 384 Sykes Road.
The classes teach the skills and techniques needed to carry out basic cycle maintenance to keep bikes in a roadworthy condition; including adjusting and maintaining brakes and more.
While Slough Trading Estate staff who have a STE Discount Card, will keep being able to take advantage of the free bike surgeries taking place on the first Wednesday of each month, courtesy of Stows Cycles and Cycle Experience.

These activities and events are all part of the Better by… campaign, which aims to encourage people of all ages to use this environmentally-friendly mode of transport, while improving their fitness, saving money and time on the daily commute; and enabling residents to explore new places in the borough.
Councillor Martin Carter, cabinet member for planning and transport, said: “Our motto is ‘it’s better by bike’, so we are delighted to host free Bike Week events where people can get the chance to brush up their cycle skills, get their bikes checked over and enjoy a group cycle ride with fellow enthusiasts.
“We are also hoping that Bike Week might inspire people to make the switch from car to bike, which could help offset traffic in Slough; while at the same time improve the environment and health and wellbeing of Slough residents.
“But most of all, we want everyone to enjoy everything the week has to offer!”
Better by… events are taking place in schools and work places in Slough throughout the year. For more information, see the official Better by… page.
